What is Ginkgo Biloba leaf extract?
Ginkgo Biloba, a unique nootropic herb native to China, is a traditional Chinese medicine used for the treatment of tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and memory loss such as Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. Ginkgo Biloba, a natural ingredient science-approved by many countries(such as German Commission E), has been one of the top 10 best selling herbal supplements in the United States for more than 10 years on end.
Ginkgo has many other names, such as Maidenhair tree, Ginkobaum in German language,EGb 761, ‘living fossil'(since ginkgo is the oldest living species of three on the earth), and it often mispelled as gingko biloba
Chemical constituents of Ginkgo Biloba leaf extract
Most ginkgo biloba extracts available on the Europen market are standardized ton 24% flavones glycosides and 6% terpene lactones. However, there are more compounds in it. According to the ginkgo biloba monograph by the ABC Clinical Guide to Herbs, The main components include bioflavonoids (amentoflavone, bilobetin, ginkgetin), Flavonoids (quercetin, isorhamnetins, kaempferol), proanthocyanidins, Trilactonic diterpenes(Ginkgolides A,B,C), Trilactonic sesquiterpene bilabolids (Bilobalide).
The carboxylic acids known as Ginkgolic acids which are usually seen as somewhat toxic and thus limited to 5-10ppm in many standardizations of ginkgo biloba, in the Germany Pharmacopoeia, the requirement of ginkgolic acids is no more than 5pmm. Bilobalide and the ginkgolides are thought to be the main bioactive constituents that are unique to ginkgo biloba supplementation
Mechanism of action of Ginkgo Biloba leaf extract
As mentioned before, the Ginkgolides (primarily ginkgolide B) inhibits platelet activating factor; inhibit 3’5’-cyclic GMP phosphodiesterase, leading to endothelium relaxation. And the flavonoid fraction (especially quercetin) increases serotonin release and uptake;inhibits age-related reduction of muscarinergic cholinoceptors and alpha-adrenoceptors, and stimulates choline uptake in the hippocampus; acts as a free-radical scavenger; inhabits nitric oxide formation, which may cause its neuroprotective effects; Antagonism of PAF,antioxidant and metabolic actions, and effects on neurotransmitters may be due to the flavonoids and terpenoids, acting together or separately.
Benefits of taking Ginkgo Biloba leaf extract (beneficios)
1. Cerebral insufficiency: memory deficit, poor concentration, depression, and headache resulting from demential syndromes; attention and memory loss that occur with Alzheimer’s disease and multi-infarct dementia. Brain functions require large amount of energy in the form of a constant supply of glucose and oxygen. In dementia due to degeneration with neuronal loss and impaired neurotransmission, decline of intellectual function is associated with disturbances in the supply of oxygen and glucose. The various compounds found in ginkgo may play a protective role in different stages of the decline of intellectual function via several mechanisms of actions: vasoregulating activity of arteries, capillaries, and veins(increased blood flow); platelet activating factor (PAF) antagonism; homeostasis of inflammation and oxidative stress; prevention of cell membrane damage caused by free radicals; and neurotransmission modulation.
2. Vertigo and tinnitus (ring in the ear) of vascular and involutional origin.
3. Peripheral vascular disease: improvement of pain-free walking distance in Peripheral Arterial Occlusive Disease in Stage II according to Fontaine (intermittent claudication) in a regimen of physical therapeutic measures, in particular walking exercise.
Other potential uses:
Sexual dysfunction associated with SSRI use
Control of acute altitude sickness symptoms and vascular reactivity to cold exposure.
Protective action in hypoxia
Acute cochlear deafness.
Side effects of Ginkgo Biloba leaf extract
Ginkgo biloba extract is GRAS approved by the FDA and the Germany Pharmacopoeia, rare cases of stomach or intestinal upsets, headaches, or allergic skin reactions have been documented. In May of 2014, rumors and some biased researched institutes reported that Ginkgo Biloba herbs from China found to contain shockingly high levels of toxic heavy metal lead. This is not true. They are only a way to advise their so-called zero lead. The United States authorities said it is safe with ginkgo biloba supplements, and no need to worry about that.
Dosage of Ginkgo Biloba leaf extract
The German Commission E makes the following recommendations:
for chronic cognitive disorders, a minimum of 8 weeks with administration for more than 3 months subject to medical review; for intermittent claudication, not less than 6 weeks; for vertigo and tinnitus (vascular origin), use for more than6–8 weeks has no therapeutic benefit. Clinical studies suggest the following duration: for cerebral insufficiency, 4 weeks to one year as observed in clinical trials—improvements are usually seen after 8–12 weeks of treatment;24 weeks for peripheral vascular disease.DRY EXTRACT (STANDARDIZED): 40–60 mg in solid pharmaceutical form 2–3 times daily to treat dementia syndromes(120–240 mg/day); or 40–60 mg dry extract 2–3 times daily to treat intermittent claudication, vertigo, and tinnitus(120–160 mg/day).
