What is Centrophenoxine?

Centrophenoxine, according to Wikipedia, is an ester of dimethylethanolamine (DMAE) and 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (pCPA). DMAE is a natural substance, found especially in fish. pCPA is a synthetic compound that resembles a variety of plant hormones called auxins. Centrophenoxine is a Cholinergic compound with a DMAE (Dimethylaminoethanol) component, and acts as a better absorbed transporter of DMAE into the brain. It is sold under the brand name Lucidril but can easily be bought over the counter or online with the names as Centro, meclofenoxate, etc.

Centrophenoxine is synthesized from DMAE who is a natural chemical that has been shown to improve areas of cognition and mood.

Centrophenoxine vs DMAE

One thing for sure is that Centrophenoxine is much stronger than DMAE as a nootropic. This is likely due to a higher bioavailability of Centrophenoxine or a difference in how it is metabolized in the liver. If you are taking DMAE as a choline source, consider switching to Centrophenoxine as it is known to be more powerful as a nootropic substance.

Both substances are broken down in the liver. The liver metabolizes both substances and breaks them down into choline or phospholipid molecules. DMAE has been suggested to have limited effectiveness because the choline molecules are charged and therefore have limited effectiveness in getting to the brain.

Mechanism of action of Centrophenoxine

How does Centrophenoxine work? Although there have been much research performed, centrophenoxine’s method of action still isn’t completely transparent. What is known is that centrophenoxine increases the amount of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that resides in the synaptic vesicles.  The specific pathways centrophenoxine uses are unknown. The two theories surrounding this are that it converts into an intermediary phospholipid which is then used to make acetylcholine or it breaks down into choline in the brain and naturally leads to the conversion of acetylcholine. Regardless, one thing we know is that centrophenoxine is a net cholinergic and may possibly be used as an alternative to other sources of choline.

The mechanism that Centrophenoxine uses to promote memory formation itself may also have a role in boosting brain power. Evidence indicates that Centrophenoxine along with a number of other Nootropic supplements can help to actually build new neurons and even synapses between neurons. These connections are thought to grow and develop over time, which can lead to improved overall thought and cognition. This can also improve the communications between neurons especially in the different hemispheres of the brain, which helps them to transmit information more efficiently and may even promote more creative thought.

Benefits of taking Centrophenoxine supplements

From the introduction of Wikipeida, centrophenoxine has been clinically shown to improve memory, have a mentally stimulating effect, and improve general cognition. centrophenoxine also increases cellular membrane phospholipids.

Centrophenoxine does not just help improve the memory, but also aids in protecting memory and reversing the effects of aging on the brain. Centrophenoxine increases RNA which are used by neurons to create protein which is used to encode memory and mend damaged cells in the brain.

Side effects of taking Centrophenoxine supplements

Centrophenoxine is generally considered safe. However possible side effects may include nausea or mild dizziness. People with severely high blood pressure or convulsive disorders such as epilepsy should avoid meclofenoxate. Large doses may cause tight jaw clenching.

Dosage of Centrophenoxine supplements

Many experts suggest beginning with a small dose of Centrophenoxine powder, in the area of 250mg. (For certain health problems like Alzheimer’s it is common to take larger doses so if you think this might apply to you speak to your doctor for their recommendations). This can be taking once or twice per day. If you intend to use split doses, then make sure to do so in the morning and then early afternoon. Since one of the benefits is increased energy, using it too late in the day could result in some difficulties falling asleep. The actual daily dosage range can vary between 300 and 1000mg depending on your goals and sensitivity levels. Only increase once you know how this supplement effects your body chemistry.

Another thing to remember is your dosage may need to be adjusted if you plan to use a Centrophenoxine stack with other nootropics. For example, if you are using this supplement with Piracetam you may want to base how much Centrophenoxine you take off of a ratio of the intended Piracetam dosage. Some people suggest using a 5:1 stack ratio with a maximum of 1000 mg of Centrophenoxine per day. So, if you were planning to take 2 grams of Piracetam powder in a day, you would want to use 400 mg of Centrophenoxine. This may again need to be adjusted if you want to use other acetylcholine supplements in your stack but experience will be the best guide here. Note: Do not take Centrophenoxine sublingually as we have heard reports of it causing a rash and skin irritation/peeling when placed under the tongue.
